Tucked into a sleepy, forested lot on Bainbridge Island, this ADU was always the quiet star of the property — it just hadn’t been asked the right questions yet. A builder-grade special from around 2000, the space had incredible volume and natural light going for it, but little else in the way of character or function.
The kitchen presented the clearest opportunity. An awkward U-shaped layout was reconfigured into a clean galley that dissolved naturally into the open floor plan, improving both flow and daily livability. From there, the design language found its footing — simple, honest materials and strong architectural through-lines guiding the space toward the Northwest contemporary it always had in it: modern, cozy, and grounded.
Every decision was shaped by what lived just outside the windows. The limestone countertop, refinished red oak floors, and the perfect shade of PNW white all speak to the mossy, forested setting beyond the glass. Natural textures carry that conversation inside — hand-thrown ceramics, jute, brick, and wood layered alongside vintage post-modern and mid-century pieces to create something that feels collected rather than decorated.
The result is a home that lives as much outside as in.
